Last Saturday, Petro-Canada, Suncor’s retail and wholesale operation, posted a notice on social media that customers couldn’t log in to its Petro-Points loyalty program from the company’s app and website. Despite the disruption, Suncor Energy stated that it was not aware of any evidence of customer, supplier, or employee data being compromised or misused.
At the time of publication, Suncor Energy’s media office has yet to provide further comments about the incident.
Suncor Energy’s operations include petroleum refining, production, and Petro-Canada retail and wholesale distribution networks.
Cyber Threats to Canada’s Oil and Gas Industries
The Canadian Center for Cyber Security recently released a report on the cyber threats facing the country’s oil and gas industries. The report identified ransomware attacks as the top cyber threat to the reliable supply of oil and gas to Canadians.
According to the report, the industry is also a prime target for state-sponsored cyber espionage, and may be attacked by state-sponsored actors during times of geopolitical tension. However, attacks by state-sponsored actors are unlikely outside of hostilities.
It is important for companies in the oil and gas industries to remain vigilant and take steps to protect their operations from cyber threats.
