Honda Motor Co. has announced that it is recalling approximately 1.2 million sport-utility vehicles and minivans. This recall is due to the rearview camera malfunction, which may not appear on the display, thus escalating the risk of crashes or injuries.
The recall affects the following Honda vehicles:
- Odysseys, model years 2018 to 2023
- Passports, model years 2019 to 2023
- Pilots, model years 2019 to 2022
According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the potential number of affected vehicles totals 1,198,280.
The NHTSA has attributed the faulty rearview camera to a defective Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST) communication coaxial cable connector. Consequently, these Honda vehicles do not comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, “Rear Visibility.”
Honda received the first report in February 2019 regarding audio and display flickering on its rearview-camera display, observed a potential trend and extended the warranty to affected vehicles in January 2021.
The automaker has not received any reports of injuries or fatalities related to this issue.
Honda’s U.S.-listed stock decreased by 0.3% in morning trading, while TE Connectivity shares gained 1.3%.
Finally, Honda’s stock has increased by 31.5% year-to-date, and the iShares MSCI Japan exchange-traded fund advanced by 11.9%, while the S&P 500 gained 13.1%.
