The Back Story
It’s the start of the big Labor Day weekend, and Americans are on the hunt for a cold, refreshing, and boozy beverage to savor the end of summer. Surprisingly, many are turning to a sip with Finnish roots.
The Finnish Long Drink, a fizzy and gin-based concoction, has quickly become a massive hit in the U.S. Despite its ties to Finland, this version is specially produced for the American market. Interestingly, it is canned in unexpected locations like Utica, N.Y., and Kannapolis, N.C.
A Taste of Finland
So, what exactly is a Finnish long drink? It’s a style of carbonated beverage with a citrus twist known as “lonkero” in Finland. This delightful concoction is actually the most popular category of liquor in its home country.
The history of the Finnish Long Drink dates back to the 1952 Olympic summer games held in Helsinki. The Finnish government wanted to ensure that attendees had a refreshing drink that was quick to serve. Thus, they commissioned the creation of what we now know as the long drink.
Journey to the U.S.
But how did this Scandinavian sensation find its way to the United States?
The Success Story of a Refreshing Finnish Drink
Sakari Manninen, a founder of an American brand, was studying in the U.S. when he realized that he and his fellow Finnish students were longing for a taste of home. According to Manninen, “We didn’t feel like there was anything quite like it on the American market.” Motivated by this gap, Manninen and his partners decided to create their own version of the drink and introduced it to the market in 2018.
The brand quickly gained popularity. In its first year, they managed to sell an impressive 21,133 cases of the beverage. By 2022, this number had skyrocketed to over one million cases, and Manninen confidently predicts that they are on track for “well over 100%” growth in 2023. The brand has even expanded its product line to include a cranberry-flavored version and a zero-sugar option.
Our Impression
The Finnish entrepreneurs behind this brand seem to have struck gold. Their beverages offer a much-needed breath of fresh air compared to the overly sweet ready-to-drink canned cocktails flooding the American market. Admittedly, the original version may not be to everyone’s taste, as it carries a slight bitter edge. However, the cranberry-flavored variant has the potential to become a beloved summer sip or even a year-round favorite – especially as we reluctantly bid farewell to the summer season.
How to Enjoy
Simplicity is key with this canned beverage. Just chill it, crack it open, and you’re ready to savor the experience. For those seeking an elevated touch, pouring it into a tall glass adds an extra flourish to your enjoyment.
