The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating Tesla after a whistleblower complaint, according to a report by Seeking Alpha on Monday.
The whistleblower claimed that the company failed to properly inform its shareholders and the public on the fire risks associated with solar panel systems defects over several years.
The fire risk concern has been discussed in numerous news reports, but the new letter sent by the SEC is the first sign of an official investigation.
The EV maker is already facing widely-publicized federal safety investigation into accidents involving the company’s diver assistant systems.
Shares of the EV giant Tesla are down 3.13% on the reports of the SEC probe.
